I am going on a trip to Munich (Bavaria) on December 2, 2023 by organized bus to attend the Bundesliga match Bayern Munich against Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena and the Christmas Markets, in the middle of an exceptional snowstorm that transformed the city into a unique winter setting, but the journey was long, very long by bus.
The weather forecast was extreme (-15 degrees), so I took my big cold jacket (used in Iceland and Norway).
The snow is intense from departure to arrival in Munich, we think we are in Siberia or Lapland!
Edit: We learn that tonight’s match is canceled, so we are going to look for a restaurant and hope that the Christmas Market is open…
With this very cold weather, I located a Restaurant Brasserie.
I want to eat “local” and Bavarian so I take a “Schweinshaxe” (roasted pork ham), Bavarian specialty, it is delicious and also very filling.
I also took as a drink an Augustiner BräuMunchen draft beer, it is a traditional beer produced in Munich since 1328 (by the Augustinian monks). Be careful because “Alcohol is dangerous for your health”, photo published as part of the discovery of the brewing and culinary traditions of Munich.
The decoration of the Restaurant is very typical of Munich, there is a large room upstairs and in the basement a cellar with a red brick vault, historical paintings and hunting trophies.
Continuation of the journey under the snow in Munich, with its majestic churches and winter landscapes.
The quiet streets lined with snow-covered trees and covered parks create a magical atmosphere.
We take the opportunity to admire the alleys and shops of Munich near the Wiesn (venue of the Oktoberfest).
We continue our visit to the main Christmas Market in Munich (Alt Stadt / Old Town) under a thick layer of snow and especially black ice 🙁
It’s hard to walk without slipping, but that doesn’t stop us from discovering local specialties like Dampfnudeln, Flammkuchen and mulled wine (be careful, alcohol is dangerous for your health), and especially from admiring the sparkling decorations of the traditional huts.
Bavarian tradition combines with the winter splendor of Munich.
Dive into the heart of the Christmas magic in Munich where a majestic Carrousel (wooden Christmas Pyramid) proudly sits in the center of the market.
Christmas pyramids are a traditional German decoration dating back to the 16th century.
There is also a nativity scene in a small wooden chalet that recreates the sacred scene of the Nativity
On the famous Marienplatz Square (the most famous in the city) we see the Neues Rathaus.
Many stands offer the classic spicy Glühwein (mulled wine), but be careful “Drink responsibly”.
Now, head to Marienplatz in the Center of Munich to discover the Christmas Market (for information there are several in Munich).
On site we discover a Chalet with a giant Pretzel placed on it, local crafts and typical culinary specialties such as gingerbread.
We are now going to look for a Restaurant, we are a whole Group (bus) and we have not booked anything…
We are lucky, we find a table without reservation for our group, not far from Marienplatz.
Rather typical Bavarian restaurant, I take a dish: Plate of grilled sausages on a bed of sauerkraut and mustard, simple and delicious!
Then, we leave for the bus, very difficult walk, more than 30 minutes of walking on a totally icy ground…
